Decorating trends I just don’t get Vol III

Travertine.

Yes, let’s put up what appears to be a very porous surface (I just looked it up, it’s limestone – so yes, it IS very porous.) into bathrooms and kitchen back-splashes where we are likely to expose surfaces to lots of water or oil.

This seems like a good idea, because everyone loves permanently filthy surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms.

Am I missing something here?

I could expand this to other kitchen back-splashes – I’ve seen wine corks, pieces of old pallets, pebbles, bamboo, and brick suggested. Maybe if you have one of those decorative kitchens where only the microwave gets used it would work for you.

I’ll stick to hard, non-porous surfaces, thank you very much.
