Memorial Day trip day 1

We drove through the smoke from the biggest fire in NM history. There is a clear demarcation between smoke and no smoke.

We stayed at El Morro National monument.

People have been scribbling their signatures on this rock for centuries. The native people started it with their petroglyphs.

Then the conquistadors wrote incredibly pompous things, this one in 1709!

Then the first Americans came through and left a typo. Typical Americans.

We found out later that this rock formation is called the woodpecker.

We hiked to the top of El Morro, it’s like a whole different world up there.
