2nd post on a Friday. Clearly I am not one of those people who goes out and does things on Friday nights.

Early this week I heard from Ken who heard from a friend from school, that one of our professors at Case was in hospice care and not expected to live long. Today he died. He was on both my masters and doctoral committees and Ken and I each took a class from him. I think he might have been on Ken’s masters committee as well, but I can’t remember. He had to be one of the smartest people I have ever met, and he was a great (and tough and dryly hilarious) teacher. I can remember many times in his class when he would say something really funny and none of the other (foreign) students in the class would laugh and I would feel weird for laughing. Anyway, it’s sad and he will surely be missed.

On a more cheerful note, my cousin (also a materials sort, ironically) and his wife (NOT materials, probably just as well, we need some balance in the family) are both interviewing for jobs in Albuquerque early next week. They and their baby (not yet determined whether HE is into materials, although he probably likes chewing on them at this point in his life) are going to stay with us this weekend and see how they like Albuquerque. Should be fun!

We have had more visitors in the 9 months we’ve lived here than in the 4-6 years we lived in Cleveland! This is undoubtedly because Cleveland is a terrible place where dreams do not come true, prayers go unanswered, wilderness is nonexistent, and people are boring, not because Albuquerque is a two day drive closer to people who might want to visit.
